Background:
ALPPS has experienced an immense evolution since the initial description in 2012 by Schnitzbauer et al. The worldwide distribution of ALPPS has led to various adjustments over time including more careful patient selection as well as technical modifications. These adjustments were all attempted to improve the safety of this procedure. Up to date, it is still totally unclear whether these modifications actually impact early mortality.
Objectives:
The aim of this study is to evaluate the potential risk adjustment in ALPPS in terms of selection and technical modification towards a safer procedure over the time period of 2011 to 2016 using the novel ALPPS risk score.
Methods:
The international ALPPS registry will be analyzed for changes of early mortality (90d or in-hospital mortality) over the time period 2011 to 2016. These findings will be tested for associations with important predictors of early mortality in ALPPS. In addition, the recently proposed ALPPS risk score, which was presented at the European Surgical Association 2016 in Edinburgh, will be used to analyze whether a change of risk adjustment occurred and finally resulted in improved short-term outcome in ALPPS.
